Bahrain Urges Reopening of Strait of Hormuz Amid Rising Risks

(MENAFN) Bahrain has called for swift international action to ensure the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, warning that continued disruptions in the waterway could further destabilize global trade and security.

Speaking to journalists prior to a high-level United Nations Security Council session focused on maritime safety, Bahrain’s Foreign Minister Abdullatif bin Rashid Al Zayani stressed that rising tensions in key shipping lanes are already affecting the world economy.

“We meet at a moment of growing concern over the security of international maritime navigation, especially in key waterways vital for global trade, energy security and economic stability,” he said.

According to reports, Al Zayani also revealed that he was presenting a joint declaration on behalf of a wide group of nations. The statement strongly opposed any actions that interfere with navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

The declaration reiterated backing for Security Council Resolution 2817 and criticized what it described as Iranian conduct, including alleged closure of the strait and attacks on neighboring states.

It further stated that such developments constitute “a threat to international security and to navigational rights and freedoms,” underlining that uninterrupted passage through the waterway is crucial for global economic stability and prosperity.

“We reiterate our call for the urgent and unimpeded opening of the strait,” Al Zayani said, reading from the statement.
